Toxicity has been big on my radar, as you might already know. I had previously written on ways to keep yourself sane when in a toxic environment. Unfortunately, while the world is of course beautiful, it is also quite toxic and always will be, so you will constantly have to work on ways to rid yourself of the toxin the best you can. Here are 15 ways to cleanse your life of toxicity. Some are habits you want to incorporate for life while others are things to do periodically when you need a particularly strong dose of spring cleaning.
The weather is finally showing signs of spring a month in, so let’s get to that renewal and rebirth aspect of this blossoming season!
15 – Go on an unfollowing spree on social media
I’ve talked about this before, like in my post about #FOMO on Instagram, but social media can actually be quite a toxic addition to your life. If you are not up for getting rid of it completely, that is understandable; there are other ways to keep it from negatively affecting you. One of those ways is to take back the power and control over what you consume–and this involves monitoring who you are following on social media. If an account makes you envious, miserable, dissatisfied with your own life, ungrateful, and makes you constantly compare yourself to that person, then quickly hit that unfollow button. Along with that, you want to follow accounts that add to your life and make you happy.
14 – Break up with your “friends”
Unfortunately, it is not only social media accounts you need to unfollow but also people you know in real life at times. I have also written previously on the signs that you should break up with your friends, and I would like to bring back that concept here. Most friendships are great, but there will be ones that sour into toxic relationships. When it comes to this, it is time to cut that person loose if they are doing more harm than good.
13 – Have one cup of tea a day

I love having my one cup of coffee a day, but I also make sure to get my one cup of tea a day. Tea is a powerful antioxidant, and what really amazes me and attracts me is the fact that there is such a myriad of teas that serve different uses and purposes. You can change up what tea you drink based on what you need that day. I, for one, really like having my cup of tea while reading up on the benefits of that specific type online. It helps me to take mental notes of what the tea is doing for my body as I take it in. This one serves both a physical and mental way of detoxifying yourself.
12 – Do a face steam and mask
Another more literal way of detoxifying yourself is having a little spa day for yourself at home! I really got into doing a face steam at home because I have very clogged up, huge pores. It’s also very relaxing to let the steam wash over my face, enveloping it in a friendly hug for about twenty minutes. I use this NanoSteamer* that can also warm towels or be used as a humidifier. I usually follow up with a mask to take advantage of my opened pores. After this process, you will be feeling pretty good.
11 – Air out your home
Spring is here! The weather is fine! Now open up your curtains and your windows to let some of that fresh air in. Prop open the door. It is very important to get that staleness out of the air so you can stop breathing in the dust, replacing it with some clean, fresh air straight from outdoors. This will help your health and clear out your mind. Plus, you want good air when you do those inhalations for meditating right? Which brings me to…
10 – Meditate and stretch
Stretching has become a part of my daily routine. I’ve never been flexible, but trying to stretch out my body helps me stretch out my mind. I feel less stiff inside and out. Plus, this will get you relaxed and ready for meditating, which is another great way to clear your life of toxicity. Empty out those negative thoughts, the toxicity that settled in. Meditating in silence can be hard, which is why I would recommend using guided meditations. I particularly like The Honest Guys on YouTube, as I’ve mentioned before.
9 – Journal away the toxicity

Journaling is another form of meditation, except it can be less relaxing–this doesn’t make it any less satisfying. Let your journal be the friend or therapist you speak to, unburdening yourself of your darkest thoughts, deepest concerns, and traitorous self-doubt. Afterwards, you will instantly feel better, like a weight has been lifted off your shoulder. Make this a habit. For more help, refer to my post on the best ways to keep a diary.
8 – Utilize positive affirmations
Instead of constantly saying negative affirmations to yourself, like these ones, you want to shift your attention to the positive affirmations. Growing up, you probably heard lots of people putting you down or criticizing you, and you let these negative affirmations rule your thoughts. Even if there were plenty of positive ones to balance it all out, they were most likely left unheard. Don’t let your brain play you like that. Instead, choose to actively ignore the negativity and foster the positivity within you. Hang motivational posters around your room. Write optimistic post-its for yourself and leave them everywhere. Tell yourself how amazing you are, even if you don’t believe it–for now.
7 – Smile at yourself
People are all innately sort of vain, especially in this modern era of selfies and filters and all that jazz, so it’s totally fine if you always find yourself catching yourself in the mirror or a reflective surface. It’s just an instinct or a reflex, so that’s fine, but add this little action to this habit: smile. Just smile at yourself. Smiling instantly will make you feel better, about yourself and everything else around you. When people seem to be distant from you, when you need some love, let that person in the reflection give you what you need with a friendly, warm smile. You have the power to give yourself what you need.
6 – Have an unplug period
Okay, to be completely honest, I am still working on this. Technology is definitely toxic and has taken over all our lives, so make sure you set aside a period when you’re away from it all. Your brain needs its own recharge. Begone blue light! You probably heard that it’s good to put away your phone and other electronics at least an hour before you head to bed. I’ve been getting better at this because I’ve been reading more lately, and I do have to say that it’s been pretty nice. I noticed that whenever I am having a particularly hard time, I will always turn back to my good, ol’ reliable friends: books. They are always good distractions, but they also take me away to another land where I can actually be inspired or intrigued. I personally recommend going for a book that isn’t so dark or realistic–one that you know will end up being okay. I’ve been immersed in my Tamora Pierce books once again. Find an author to fall in love with and read everything of his or hers you can get your hands on. If anything, they will remind you there is beauty in this world where people can piece together such visionary art for your mind. 4 – Clean out and reorganize your space
Do the traditional spring cleaning! If you de-clutter your physical space, you will de-clutter your inner mental one in the process. Reorganize things, and then everything will seem clearer in your mind. Although I’m not a particularly clean or neat person, I do enjoy organizing once in a while. There is a therapeutic feeling to moving around your space, putting things back to where they belong. There is almost a meditative rhythm to it, except there is more action, which is great for when you’re itching to move. I recently did this with my closet, setting aside clothes I never wear anymore for donation, which was a load off. I also brought to the forefront clothes that I forgot about and still want to wear, which is like a refresher for my wardrobe.
3 – Do not respond to negativity
People will try to bait you. There always will be a toxic person in your life, no matter how hard you try to get rid of all of them (it can even just be an obnoxious stranger standing behind you on line), but it is up to you to let their toxicity just pass on over you like water on an oil canvas. That is the only thing in your control, anyway. Once you get into that habit of ignoring rather than reacting to their bait, you will have mastered another way to cleanse your life of toxicity. It is definitely very hard and I’ve become quite quick to react as of late, but I’m working on it! Blogger Damn, Girl covers this well in her own post.
2 – Surround yourself with the right people
Just like with social media, you want to use to your advantage your ability to choose who you surround yourself with. Follow who you admire on social media, and follow those who only improve rather than worsen your life in reality. This goes hand-in-hand with the concept of breaking up with friends. You can cut loose those who are toxic and harmful, but make sure that you are also gaining friends whom you look up to or who always wash you in their positivity. Environment is contagious, whether it’s toxic or wonderful. Choose the wonderful.
1 – Take mini vacations
As you all know, I went to Boston earlier this month! I really needed the trip, and it really did a world of good. I came back refreshed. Even a few days away from toxicity can help cleanse your life of toxicity like it did mine. You don’t have to go on a long vacation far away or anything–maybe even just find an AirBnB or inn nearby where you can get some privacy or just to surround yourself with a new environment when you’re tired of home.
Toxicity is something I’m still struggling with every single day. It’s tough. The journey out of this acid fog is treacherous and scary, but I am with you every step of the way. Even I am not perfect at this, as you can tell in the entries above where I admit I haven’t accomplished something (like unplugging every single day), so let’s make it through together, okay?
